In 1860, Henry was living in Presque Isle, Maine. He enlisted there into Company I, the "Presque Isle Company," of the 7th Maine Infantry at the age of 22 on August 21, 1861. He was promoted to full Captain on October 1, 1861, and was transferred to Company C. He was killed in action at Spotsylvania Court House on May 12, 1864. According to the history of the 7th, it fought at the Bloody Angle on May 12. The entire Sixth Corps saw action at the Angle.
According to Maine Civil War enlistment records, Henry was 6' 2 3/4" inches tall with a light complexion, blue eyes, and light hair. He was a mechanic by trade.
