According to the 1850 census, Henry was living with his family in Stetson, Penobscot County, Maine. In the household were Hazen (33), Matilda (29), Lorenzo (14), Henry F. (12), and Sarah M. (4).

In 1860, Henry was living in Presque Isle, Maine. He enlisted there into Company I, the "Presque Isle Company," of the 7th Maine Infantry at the age of 22 on August 21, 1861. He was promoted to full Captain on October 1, 1861, and was transferred to Company C. He was killed in action at Spotsylvania Court House on May 12, 1864. According to the history of the 7th, it fought at the Bloody Angle on May 12. The entire Sixth Corps saw action at the Angle.

According to Maine Civil War enlistment records, Henry was 6' 2 3/4" inches tall with a light complexion, blue eyes, and light hair. He was a mechanic by trade.

By 1860, Henry's entire family had moved to Presque Isle. In the home of Henry's parents were Sarah (14) and Lorenzo Hill (23). Henry's brother Lorenzo lived in Presque Isle and joined Co. E, 1st Maine Cavalry in 1861 as a Sergeant. He was discharged for disability in 1863.

According to the U.S. Pension Agency, his mother, Matilda O. Hill, was receiving his pension of $20.00. She was dropped from the pension rolls on December 19, 1904, when she died. Her record was signed by Selden Connor, Pension Agent.

Captain Hill is listed in Civil War Burials Fredericksburg Virginia, compiled and edited by Maude E. Mercer Sellman, 1979, p. 41.
