WORLD WAR II VETERAN
MONROE COUNTY, MICHIGAN

Sgt.

An Army veteran of World War II, Richard served from May 13, 1941, to October 19, 1945, attaining the rank of sergeant. He received the distinguished unit citation and the European-Asian-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with five bronze stars. Military burial rites were under the auspices of Monroe Post 1138, Veterans of Foreign Wars.


Richard was the son of Richard and Cassie (Clark) Ryland. He was born at Helt Township, Indiana. After his discharge from service, he moved to Monroe, Michigan. On November 3, 1945, he was married to F. Louise Dalton in Bowling Green, Ohio. To this union two children were born, James and Mary. Richard had been employed as a weighmaster by the Consolidated Packaging Corp. from January, 1950, until the company closed in 1972. He then was employed by Michigan Gas Utilities Co. until he retired in 1983. He was a member of Montezuma (Ind.) Lodge 89, F and AM. After six months of poor health Richard passed away at Mercy Memorial Hospital, Monroe, Mi. He was survived by his wife Louise; son James, daughter Mary; brother Harold of Indiana; sisters Esther Saulman and Mary Kehrer; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother Lowell Ryland. Monroe Lodge 27, Free and Accepted Masons, officiated services.

Richard Lee Ryland was laid to rest at St. Joseph Cemetery, Monroe, Monroe County, Michigan.
