Hans Asplund studied architecture at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm between 1944-1947 and won first prize in a competition for a community center in Eslöv. He was employed by the United Nations architectural office in New York in 1947-1948, at the Cooperative Association's architectural office 1948-1950 and at Nordiska Kompaniet in 1951-53. He was a professor of architecture at Lund University from 1964-1987.
Hans Asplund was the son of the architect Erik Gunnar Asplund and Gerda Sellman. The father had early distinguished himself as a classicist and later as one of the Swedish pioneers of functionalism. Hans Asplund considered himself for much of his life as a modernist, both as a practicing architect and a teacher. He designed, among others, the above referenced Civic Hall in Eslöv and an extension to Nordiska Kompaniet department store in Stockholm in 1963.
Hans Asplund is said to be the one to have coined the term nybrutalism (new brutalism) in a playful comment in 1950 to Bengt Edman and Lennart Holm. The term spread through English colleagues on visits to Sweden and was used there by some younger architects.
With time Hans Asplund became increasingly critical of modernism and in 1980 published the book Farväl till funktionalismen (Farewell to functionalism), which went systematically through what the author considered the shortcomings of modernist architecture.
