Thomas A. (“Tommy”) Nortz, 88, of 9638 Pearl St., Croghan, died Saturday, March 31st 2012 at University Hospital in Syracuse.

He was born August 11, 1923 in the family home in Syracuse, New York, son of Hilary and Addie Burkhard Nortz. He graduated from Lowville Free Academy in 1941.

In 1943 he joined the United States Army where he was trained to install and operate field radios, receive and send Morse code and perform radio maintenance. He was qualified as a .45 pistol sharp shooter. He volunteered for and served in the European Theatre of Operations with the 75th Infantry Division as an Anti-tank Gunner. He participated in the Rhineland-Ardennes and Central European Campaigns. Tommy was wounded in action on January 13, 1945 by heavy artillery near St. Vith, Belgium – The Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the Purple Heart, the European African Middle Eastern Ribbon with one bronze campaign star; a Combat Infantry Badge and the World War II Victory Ribbon. He was honorably discharged at the rank of Corporal on March 8, 1946.

Tommy married Ellen E. Campany on June 1, 1946 at St. Stephen’s Church in Croghan with Rev. Amadeus Burke officiating. The couple operated THE NORTZ HOUSE in Belfort until 1947 when they purchased THE INDIAN RIVER HOTEL that they operated until December, 1955. Tommy worked as a Rural Letter Carrier for the US Postal Service for 29 years, retiring in 1980. The couple moved to Croghan in 1990.

Tommy was an active member of St. Anthony’s Parish, Indian River and later St. Stephen’s Parish, Croghan. He was a member of the Lowville VFW, the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) and the Beaver River Memorial Post 1663 American Legion in Croghan.

Tommy loved playing euchre, volunteering for Legion events, cutting wood, watching softball games and taking rides in the countryside. He enjoyed visiting with friends and strangers alike and he was always ready to lend a helping hand.

Surviving are one son and his wife, David J. and Cathy Nortz, Springfield, MA; five daughters and three son-in-laws, Jane M. and Sam Jones, Brownville; Elaine K. Nortz of Washington, DC; Susan L. Nortz, Croghan, Mary Ann and John Reff, Clayton, and Beverly J. and Terry Moore, Lake Bonaparte; seven grandchildren, Matt (Shannon) Jones, Jeffrey (Michele) Jones, Stephanie Jones and Josh Klein, Sarah Buckingham, Megan Buckingham, Elizabeth Reff and Natalie Reff; two great granddaughters, AJ and Alex Jones; two brothers, Edward (Dorothea), Youngstown, and Eugene (Patricia), Croghan; a sister, Ellen Zimmer, Rochester; two sister-in-laws, Marie Nortz, Croghan; Tillie Nortz, Chandler, Arizona, and over fifty nieces and nephews.

Tommy was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Ellen, and his brothers, Richard, Hilary, Donald and Harry.
