Petition for Dower:
Children: Amy, Jane, Monroe, Minty, Lloyd, and Patsy w/o Rufus Almond ( If a women was married she had no legal rights. )

The petition shows that Jesse C. Whitley died 7/1878 intestate. Leaving surviving widow Reny Whitley and other parties above named as his heirs in law. they are all full age and living in the said county.

At the time of his death Jesse was living on land in Stanly Co.,NC near Aaron Branch, adjoining the land of Kiziah Whitley, Rufus Almond and others, known as the Jesse Whitley homeplace. containing abt 42 acres.
That petitioner Reny Whitley is entitled to Dower Rights of said land. That the Sheriff will appoint 5 men of good standing to lay off her part of the land and give her Dower and lands as said by law.
Att., J.T. Redwine

These 5 men were: Green A. Whitley, Eli Huneycutt, Jno A. Moody, Jacob A. Morton and S.M. Hearnes.

Best I can tell the men were to measure off 1/3 of the land including the dwelling house, all offices, out-houses, buildings and improvements, there on to her during the rest of her natural life.
