James Monroe Phillips, age 87, Morristown, was a deacon at the Hillcrest Baptist Church. He served as Staff Sargent in the US Air Force. He was a graduate of Tennessee Tech University with a BS degree in Biology and earned a M Ed from East Tennessee State University in Education Administration. He worked as a teacher and coach at Cosby High School, Cocke County High School, Maury High School (Dandridge) and Morristown Hamblen West High School and was also Assistant Principal at Morristown Hamblen West High School.

He was preceded in death by his wife Lillian Jane Ford Phillips, his parents, Robert Delmas and Connie Devore Phillips, and brother, Charles Eugene Phillips. He is survived by his daughters, Melissa J. Phillips and Jamie D. Wallace,two grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
