JOHN RIFFLE was born on Aug 17, 1809 in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. He died on Mar 14, 1850 in Danville, Montour County, PA (death notice appeared in Danville Intelligencer on Mar 22, 1850). He married SARAH GIBSON about 1830 in Milton, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, possibly the daughter of Joseph Gibson and Christina Hopp, of Milton. Sarah Gibson was born abt 1810 in the Milton area and died after 1870. John Riffle & his wife lived in Liberty, Columbia County, Pennsylvania in 1840 and moved to Danville, Mountour County, Pennsylvania by 1850. He was employed as a Blacksmith.

John RIFFLE and Sarah GIBSON had eight children in Pennsylvania: 1.) Ellen RIFFLE, b 1831; 2.) Augustus RIFFLE, b 1833 and served in the military between Nov 02, 1862-Aug 07, 1863 with Union Company E, 171st Infantry Regiment PA; 3.) James S RIFFLE b Jan 1834 & d Nov 18, 1912 married Sarah S ___ abt 1895, and served in Union Infantry, 178th PA Regiment, Company F; 4.) Francis J RIFFLE, b Jun 03 1837 in Danville & died May 1907 in Riverside, married Margaret WARUTZ abt 1861, was employed as a PA RR Laborer for 35 yrs; 5.) William Ambrose RIFFLE, b May 1840 & died after 1920 in Harrisburg, married Hannah E PANCOAST abt 1867 {dau of David Pancoast and Hannah Schwank}, served in 178th Regiment PA Volunteers, Company F; 6.) Sarah J RIFFLE, b Feb 1842 & died in 1920, married William PANCOAST in 1861 {son of David Pancoast and Hannah Schwank}; 7.) Mary Eliz RIFFLE b 1844-1848; 8.) Catherine E RIFFLE born May 28, 1846 in Danville & died on Jul 18, 1930 in Knobview Township, Crawford County, MO, married Charles H PANCOAST on Aug 08, 1866 in Milton {son of David Pancoast and Hannah Swank}. Her husband, Charles Pancoast served in the Union Army, Missouri 11th Cavalry, Company A.
