At an early age, she and her family moved to Indianapolis enabling her to attend the Parochial Schools in the city. She attended Saint Mary of the Woods, graduating as Sister Helen Irene, OSB. On becoming a Nun, she joined three of her sisters who preceded her in becoming nuns.
Elaine taught school in Galesburg, IL, Chicago, IL, and in Richmond, IN. In 1967, she became the Principal of the 10th Street School of Saint Joseph Parish in Jasper, IN. It was considered the largest public/parochial school in the state. She also joined the Middle School Resource Center as a consultant and conducted numerous workshops through the state for teachers.
Elaine combined her administrative skills with a huge affection for children, to produce an atmosphere not only for learning, but also growth as a person. She was fond of telling how a boy interrupted her as she was scolding him by saying, “AW, teacher, I wish you wouldn’t love me so much!”
Elaine is survived by her loving husband of 34 years, Dan Huff; sister, Joan Edwards of Florida; and stepchildren, Carolyn Hardy and Mark Huff.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Shirley Brothers Washington Memorial Chapel.
