SERVICE RECORD
The Life Guards became part of The Household Cavalry Composite Regiment at the start of the Second World War. The 1st Regiment departed the United Kingdom in February 1940, travelled across France, and arrived in Palestine on 20th February 1940, where they served as a garrison force. In May 1941, the Regiment were heavily involved in fighting in Iraq, where German supporting Rashid Ali had seized power in Baghdad. The enemy forces were overthrown and the Germans were forced to call a truce at the end of May. The action then moved towards Syria and at some point Alfred was killed. His death was thought to have been the result of a bomb blast. On 16th July 1941, the Hull Daily Mail reported Alfred’s death in action, on behalf of his wife and family .

Wife Marjorie married Ronald Will Clappison in mid-1948, in Hull. They had two children together. She died in Hull, aged 74, in mid-1988.
Father Joseph served in the Royal Engineers from 1899 and throughout the Great War. He was stationed in Gibraltar between 1910 and 1914. Joseph was discharged from the armed services in February 1920 as he was no longer fit to continue. He had contracted Malaria during 1919 while serving in Rangoon and the symptoms continued to affect him. He died at Buena Vista, Cottingham Road, Hull, aged 56, on 12th December 1935.
Mother Alice was living at 215 Bricknell Avenue, Hull, when she died in Broadgate Hospital in Walkington, Yorkshire, aged 84, on 23rd January 1966.
Sister Jane died in Hull, aged 17, in early 1922.
Brother Ronald was living with his mother in 1939 and working as a Heavy Haulage Driver. He married a trained Nurse, Mary Ellen White, in early 1941 in Hull. They had at least one child together. In 2003, Ronald was on the electoral roll at 9 New Princes Avenue, Hedon, East Yorkshire. He died there, aged 90, in the first three months of the year.
Sister Joan married Arthur Lambert Thoresby in mid-1937, in Hull. They had at least one child together. She died at 215 Bricknell Avenue, Hull, aged 72, on 5th December 1988.
Alfred's remaining siblings may potentially be still alive and are therfore not included here.
