Mary Lou was the fourth of seven children born to David Vance and Margaret Jane (Ritchie) Workman. She married Clyde Govan Sprouse in 1936 and they were the parents of eight children: Larry Randolph, Brenda Faye, Martha Gail, Ronald Dexter, Nine Marie, Myrtle Regina, Ricky Douglas, and Connie Nadine.

CONOVER - Mary Lou Workman Sprouse, 94, of Conover, passed away Friday, May 1, 2009, at Conover Nursing and Rehab Center in Conover. Mrs. Sprouse was born Aug. 28, 1914, in Catawba County, daughter of the late Dave and Margaret Ritchey Workman. She was a homemaker and member of Church of the Master. She is survived by her husband, Clyde G. Sprouse; sons, Larry Sprouse and wife, Gail, and Dexter Sprouse, all of Taylorsville, and Ricky Sprouse and wife, Chris, of Hickory; daughters, Faye S. Suggs and husband, Curtis, of Conover, Gail S. Starnes and husband, Bobby, of Hickory, Nina Smith and husband, Boone, of Houston, Texas, and Connie Finger and husband, David, of Anderson, S.C.; 14 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren; and sister, Minnie Fisher. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Sprouse was preceded in death by her daughter, Regina Drum; sisters, Maude Wilburn, Bonnie Mitchell and Bertie Brown; and brothers, Jim Workman and Tom Workman. A service of remembrance will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 4, 2009, at Church of the Master, with the Rev. James E. Humphrey officiating. Burial will follow in Brookford Cemetery The Sprouse family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m., prior to the service, at the church. Memorials may be made to Church of the Master, 2230 29th Ave. Drive, NE, Hickory, N.C. 28601.
