Arthur Allen, 86, stepped from this life into the loving arms of Jesus on June 20, 2006. He died Peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Coles Point on June 29, 1919, the eighth of 11 children born to Thomas and Susie Allen. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Bessie Bell, Nanni Guggliotto and Jane Bennett; and brothers, Walter and Tommy Allen.

Arthur stayed at home with his family helping on the farm until the age of nine at which time he was sent to the Virginia School for the Deaf (VSD). He remained at school returning home only for summer breaks, until he graduated in 1939. He participated in basketball, football and baseball and was inducted into the VSD Sports Hall of Fame. He joined the Boy Scouts at the age of 12 and attained the rank of Eagle Scout. Arthur graduated at the top of his class and gave the valedictory speech at his graduation. After graduation, he worked at the Farmville Herald in Farmville as a printer.

Arthur was a lay minister in the Episcopal Church for many years and for the last 36 years served faithfully at Good Shepherd of the Deaf Lutheran Church.

He is survived by Doris, his loving wife of 61 years; his three daughters, Becky (David) Pimentel, Darlene (Jim) Grimley and Karen (Jeff) Burgoon; grandchildren, Jason (Melissa) Pimentel, Kevin (Staci) Pimentel, John (Tara) Grimley, Michelle (Jeff) Sclueter, Dayna (Nate) Kilker, Joe Grimley, Danielle Grimley, Lauren (Patrick) Wishart, Jacob Burgoon and Tyler Burgoon; and eight great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Ruth Englegau and Estelle Sumner, and brothers, Mark, James and Jack Allen.

Funeral services were held Monday, June 26, at the Ansberg-West Funeral Home in Toledo, Ohio. Rev. Shirrel Petzoldt officiated and interment was in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park. In Lieu of flowers, the family ask that contributions be made to Good Shepherd of the Deaf Lutheran Church or to Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
