Agnes Mabel Oss Carlson. Born to Agnes & Ole Oss at Fortune Lake. Grew up on the farm [on Idlewild Road] and went through the 8th grade at a one-room country school [Fortune Lake School]. Went to High School in Crystal Falls, often walking to and from school, graduated in 1923. Took a short course in what then was Teachers College [now Northern Michigan University in Marquette], then taught school one year in Balsam (near Amasa).
On April 5, 1923 [this was actually 1924] married Alex Carlson of Bates twsp. Settled in Iron River where she spent the rest of her life.
Alex preceded her in death in July 1967 at the age of 77.
Surviving are daughter Lorraine [Meinhardt] of Iron River; grandchildren Raymond Graves [Iron River] and Kristin Graves [of Madison, Wis.]. Also two sisters, Evelyn Anderson and Mildred Scholla; and one brother Harry Oss of Phelps, Wis. There are a number of nieces and nephews.
Was preceded in death by sons Clifford in 1989, Theron 1940, and Walter 1946; one sister Flora Johnson; and three brothers Norman, Clarence and Peter.
Music "The Old Rugged Cross," "In the Garden" and "Amazing Grace."
Burial in Resthaven Cemetery.

IRON RIVER - Mabel Carlson, 92, of 1030 Minckler Street, died Nov. 11 at Iron County General Hospital.
She was born Sept. 7, 1905 in Crystal Falls, the daughter of the late Ole and Agnes (Olson) Oss. She graduated from the Crystal Falls High School and then attended Marquette Normal College. Following her teaching certification, she taught for one year at the former Balsam School.

In 1923 she married Alex Carlson and the couple moved to Iron River in 1924 where she had since resided. Her husband preceded her in death on July 16, 1967.

She was an avid outdoorsperson, and in her younger years enjoyed hunting grouse and making maple syrup with her sister Flora. For many years she won blue ribbons for her baking at the Iron County Fair. She was also an accomplished photographer and crocheter. She enjoyed traveling, playing cards, and was an avid reader throughout her life.

She was preceded in death by three sons, Theron in 1940, Walter in 1946, and Clifford in 1989; three brothers Peter, Clarence and Norman Oss; and a sister Flora Johnson.

She is survived by a daughter Lorraine Meinhardt of Iron River; two grandchildren, Raymond Graves of Iron River and Kristin Graves of Madison, Wis.; a brother Harry Oss of Phelps, Wis.; two sisters, Evelyn Anderson and Mildred Schalla, both of Iron River; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation and funeral services were held Nov. 14 at Langenberg Funeral Home in Iron River with the Rev. Kim Beckmann, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in Stambaugh, officiating.
Organist Marty Wilson accompanied soloist Myrna Cook on “How Great Thou Art,” “Softly and Tenderly” and “On the Wings of a Snow White Dove.”
Burial was in Resthaven Cemetery.
