From the book "Pioneer History of Forsyth County Georgia" by Don L. Shadburn, p. 335-337:

"Robert Montgomery, a pioneer of Gwinnett and Forsyth counties, was born June 22, 1780 in Amherst Co, Va, and died testate in Forsyth Co., GA, on Sept. 25, 1852. His wife, Elizabeth McConnell, was born 1783 in Wilkes Co., GA, daughter of John McConnell, Sr. (who left a will in 1821 in Hall Co.) and Nancy Montgomery (who may have been a sister of Francis Bell's wife, Esther Montgomery). [...]

Robert Montgomery followed the same migratory 'gateway' as hundreds of other families from Virginia, coming into Wilkes, Jackson, Hall, Gwinnett, and finally Forsyth Co. when grants were issued to the 'fortunate drawers' in the Cherokee Land and Gold Lottery of 1832. He drew Lot 705-3-1 which was granted in 1835; he soon afterward moved to the county. He was an early citizen of Cumming, living on the west side of town in a house fronting the old Canton road where Foster Gap Street branched in the direction of Sawnee Mountain and Hightower. The residence is owned by Mr. and Mrs. Bryan C. Redd, Sr."

The same book names the children of Robert and Elizabeth Montgomery:

1. Sarah ("Sally"), b. c. 1804, married Ezekiel Thomas
2. Mary, b. c. 1809, d. 1878 in Montague Co, Texas; m. c. 1830 Mark Anthony
3. John, b. 1812, d. 1856-7 in Hall or Chattooga county, Ga.; m. c. 1832 Sarah Elizabeth Thornton
4. James N , b. 1813, married on May 6, 1838 to Nancy Emily Compton
5. Nancy, b. 1817, married on Dec. 15, 1831 to Freeland W. Thornton
7. William M, b. Aug. 11, 1823, d. Jan. 11, 1894, Hico, Hamilton Co, Texas; married on Feb. 14, 1850, Forsyth Co. [Georgia] to Mary Ann Blackstock
8. Amanda Sivella, b. Oct. 25, 1825, d. Dec. 23, 1912; m. c. 1844 George W.
McDaniel
9. Robert Cicero, b. Feb. 4, 1828, d. Mar. 27, 1911; married on Nov. 13, 1853 to Frances Brogdon

From the genealogical history book "Blood Kin: Pioneer Chronicles of Upper Georgia" by Don L. Shadburn, p. 123:

"Robert Montgomery's rectangular monument, the four-sided box-style, in Cumming cemetery was placed at his gravesite soon after his death in 1852. The inscription gives his birthplace as Amherst County, Virginia. Some two decades ago, however, unknown
family descendants had the large slab removed and the original inscription sandblasted. A new inscription was placed on the reverse side giving Montgomery's 1780 birthplace as Gwinnett County!

Although he was an early settler of Gwinnett prior to moving to Cumming in the early 1830s, he hardly could have been born in Gwinnett since that county was not created until 1818. In 1997 Robert "Bob" Montgomery, a lineal descendant living in Andrews, Texas, contracted to have a new marker placed at the gravesite with the original inscription restored. This work was completed in 1998 by contract with Gibbs Monument service in Ball Ground, GA."
