Death: May 18, 1878

Samuel Augustus, named after his grandfather and great-grandfather Major Samuel Still Augustus Barker of the American Revolution, was the oldest son, the second child of William Davis Devin and Amanda Barker Devin. He also was a grandson of Thomas Devin, an enterprising merchant who brought his family through Ohio and into Iowa.

When Samuel was eleven, his father was scalded to death by a factory explosion, leaving him with great responsibilities to help his mother with the two younger children.

While at school in Cincinnati in 1874, a classmate struck him in the back. The injury caused a hemorrhage four years later and he died at age 23 in North Bend.

The family was friends with the Harrisons ... his uncle Thomas Jefferson Devin was married to Sarah Lucretia Harrison, and living in North Bend, the Devin family were close to John Scott Harrison and family. Historian Marjorie Buress informed me that John Scott Harrison visited "Gus" two weeks prior to his death and that Mr. Harrison died within a few days, too.

Samuel was buried at Congress Green cemetery and his body was stolen from the grave and taken to Ann Arbor, Michigan to be sold at the hospital for research. An investigation to the disappearance of John Harrison's remains eventually lead to the discovery of both remains.

Samuel and his father are apparently buried at Congress Green, and his mother and two siblings are buried in Long Beach, California. A family stone was erected there and included the names of William and Samuel in their honor and memory. So the headstone is in Longbeach but the remains are in Congress Green of North Bend.
