Born in Rotherham, England, he was named principal cellist of London's Royal Opera in 1794 and performed as a virtuoso soloist in many important concerts throughout England until 1851. Lindley was a frequent performer before the Prince Regent and was one of the first Professors appointed at the Royal Academy of Music, in 1822. He also composed several pieces for the instrument.
