LEROY -- Ethel B. Sears, age 93, of LeRoy, died Tuesday, June 13, 2006, at Wildwood Grove Apartments in LeRoy where she resided since 2001.
Ethel Beneta Scheevel was born Jan. 8, 1913, in Fillmore County near Greenleafton, Minn., to Ben Scheevel and Jeannie (Dornink) Scheevel. She was baptized at the Greenleafton Reformed Church and attended country schools through the eighth grade. She was united in marriage to Gilbert Austin in June of 1935. He passed away in 1963. She later married George Sears in June of 1969. He passed away in 2001, shortly after they moved from their home into Wildwood Grove. For many years, Ethel worked at the LeRoy Produce, Bergland Clothing Store, and the Sweet Shop in LeRoy. She was also well known in LeRoy for her seamstress work.
She was a member of Satersdahl Lutheran Church for several years before her many years at the LeRoy Lutheran Church. She was a member of the church women's circle and a quilters' group, in addition to helping her husband George when he was custodian of the church. She enjoyed bowling, playing games with her grandchildren, working crossword puzzles, playing cards, crocheting afghans for family members and watching the Minnesota Twins. Ethel was also very good at stretching a dollar.
She is survived by two sons: Orlo (Cheryl) Austin, of Champaign, Ill.; and Gary (Dianna) Austin, of Burnsville, Minn.; two daughters: Janice Austin Boe, of Owatonna, Minn.; and Sharon Howard, of Rochester, Minn.; step-children: Joyce Hoff, of Mason City, Iowa; Millie (Jerry) Simes, of Austin, Minn.; Mervin (Mary) Sears, of Preston, Minn.; and Jack (Alice) Sears, of Palm Coast, Fla.; 11 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, 14 step-grandchildren and several step-great-grandchildren; two sisters: Dorene Speer, of Rochester, Minn.; and Marlys (Orrin) Wiste, of Stewartville, Minn.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, one great-grandson, one brother and two sisters.
Funeral services for Ethel will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 17, 2006, at the LeRoy Lutheran Church with the Rev. Thomas Kolden officiating. Burial will be in the Church Cemetery. Friends may call at the LeRoy Lutheran Church Saturday from 10 a.m. until time of service.
Hindt Funeral Home of LeRoy, Minn., is in charge of arrangements.
