Major League Baseball Player. For fifteen seasons (1968 to 1982), he played at the first-base position with the California Angels, Texas Rangers, Chicago White Sox, New York Yankees and Oakland Athletics. Born James Lloyd Spencer, the grandson of Ben Spencer who was an outfielder with the Washington Senators in 1913, he was raised in Maryland where he attended Andover High School. Selected by the Angels during the 1st round of the 1965 Amateur Draft, he marked his Major League debut with California on September 7th, 1968 and appeared in 19 games that season. He earned All-Star status in 1973 as a replacement for the Carl Yastrzemski and experienced a World Championship title in 1978 while with the Yankees. He appeared in 4 games and recorded 2 hits during the 1978 World Series. The following season (1979), he produced career-highs in home runs with 23 and batting average with .288. In 1,553 regular season games, he compiled 1,227 hits with a .250 lifetime batting average. He was a two-time Gold Glove winner (1970 and 1977). After his playing career, he served as an assistant coach with the Navy baseball team and was a scout with the Yankees. (bio by: C.S.)
