The son of THOMAS & DOROTHY (HARBOTTLE) Hawley, he was baptized on June 7, 1645 in Roxbury, Suffolk Co., Mass. He taught school after graduation. was a schoolmaster, was a preacher for a period of time, and then became a trader.
Joseph Hawley married LYDIA MARSHAL, daughter of CAPT. SAMUEL & MARY (WILTON) MARSHALL, on September 24, 1676 in Northampton, Mass. From the will of Lydia's grandfather, LIEUT. DAVID WILTON, "If Mr. Joseph Hawley, who hath married Lydia my grandchild & is now living at Northampton see cause to settle there and build a house, I give him Land which lyeth between Elder John Strong's homelott and my own, provided he build on it and live there four years, then it shall be to him and his wife and their heirs forever."
He was a freeman in 1680, representative to the Mass. Bay Colony from Northampton in 1683, 1685, 1691 and 1692.
He was a captain of the Snow Shoe men from Northampton and was killed by Indians.
