During WWII she was employed with the civil service in Washington, D.C., where she remembered standing among the mourners lining the steets to witness the funeral procession for President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
She continued her civil service employment, from which she ultimately retired after many years of honorable service.
Her father 'Big John' Kelley was a coal miner in Johnstown, PA. He was born on 19 May 1890 at Dan's Mountain, MD, and died in Washington, D.C. in 1969. Her mother, and John's wife, Sarah, was born in Barton, Allegany County, MD in ca. 1906, and died on 11 February 1946 in Johnstown, Cambria County, PA.
