Obituary:
James Milton Shields of Germany Valley died at his home at 1:30 p.m. Friday, June 21, 1946 after an extended illness. Born in Black Log on April 11, 1875, he was the son of John and Susan (Fortney) Shields. In 1895 he was united in marriage with Annabelle Reed, who died in 1918. Eleven children survive: Mrs. Olive Ritchey, Ryde; Mrs. Mabel DeArment and Elmer J. Shields both of Lewistown; Cloyd Shields, McVeytown R.D.; Luther J. Shields, Germany Valley; Mrs. Edith Warner, Huntingdon R.D.; William H. Shields, Oxford; Mrs. Mary M. Beatty, Shirleysburg; Oscar S. Shields, Mount Union; Mrs. Alma E. Clark, Ritchvale; and James W. Shields, at home. There are fifty grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. Two sisters also survive: Mrs. Elizabeth Briggs of Bellwood and Mrs. Edith Cramer of Altoona. Following their marriage the Shields established their home in Sugar Valley where Mr. Shields was a farmer and where he was also known as a barn builder. He lived at his present house for the last forty-one years. A prayer service was held today at the late home followed by a service at 2 p.m. in the Stone Church, Germany Valley. The Rev. Martin Scholten and the Rev. George Swayne officiated. Interment was made in the Germany Valley Cemetery, Clark funeral service.
