Josiah was born in Russell Co, VA on September 4, 1885. He was eight months old when his mother died on May 6, 1886.

His father married Margaret Malvina Earnest on February 23, 1888.

On June 28, 1900,
Josiah C., age 14, lived with his father & step-mother, Ballard & Maggie Fink, ages 48 & 49, who owned a home in Castlewood, Russell Co, VA. they had been married 13 years. Josiah, at this young age, worked in a lumber mill. His father was a lumber manufacturer.

Other members of his family included his siblings Eugene M., age 21 (an engineer on a state highway); Charles S., 19 (fireman of a steam engine); & his married sister, Nora Litton, 17.

The household also included Ballard's sister-in-law, Amanda M. Earnest, age 52, and his nephew, Walter F. Earnest, age 17 (worked in a lumber mill).

Josiah married Fannie Anna Self in Russell Co, VA on June 8, 1908.

On April 15, 1910,
J. & Fannie, ages 24 & 19, owned a home in Castlewood where he worked as a rail road conductor. They had been married one year; Fannie had given birth to a 6 month old daughter, which was shown as unnamed in the census.

Josiah, age 33, & Fannie were living in Castlewood on Rt. 3 on September 12, 1918, when he registered for the WWI draft. He had a job as a Conductor for Norfolk & Western Railroad Company in Norton, Wise co, VA. He was described as being tall & slender having dark blue eyes & dark brown hair. Fannie was shown as his nearest relative.

On January 27, 1929,
Josiah C. & Fannie Anna, ages 34 & 28, were renting a farm in Castlewood. He was self-employed doing general farm work. Their children were Margaret C., age 10; Josiah M., 7; Ballard Eugene, 5; & Fannie Pauline, 2 years & 4 months.

On April 4/5, 1930,
J. Clint & Fanny, ages 45 & 39, were renting a home on North Miami Avenue in Miami, Dade Co, FL. Josiah had a job as a Switchman on a Steam Rail Road. Their children were Joe M., age 17; Ballard B., 15; Pauline F., 12; Doris E., 8; Charles W., 6; & Virginia I., 4.

Other members of the household included Josiah's nephew, Paul Lytton, age 25, & his father & step-mother, Ballard P. & Margaret M. Fink, ages 78 & 79.

Josiah died in Miami three weeks later on Apr. 26, 1930.
