Daniel had 3 brothers. William, the oldest, and James, the youngest, are without readily available records other than 1870 census.
Another younger brother, Jonathan C., left Cocke County around the time Daniel died to live briefly with his uncle Aaron Bryant in Texas. In Texas, Jonathan C. changed his name to J. C. Large, for no obvious reason. The surname Large was often taken by members of this family. One of Jonathan’s nephews, Charlie, son of Mary Ann (Branch) Brooks and who is buried in the nearby Brooks Cemetery, also took the name Large. Descendants of Jonathan (aka J. C. Large) in Oklahoma say the name came from a Large family who raised Austin Brooks as an orphan.
This name interchange is also documented in a family history of the Large family of Jones Cove (a Sevier County-Cocke County community) published by Olene Large Cage (Maryville, Tenn). Her notes on Charlie Elmore Brooks: “He was a single man. He is buried in Brooks Cemetery on English Creek - Cocke County, Tennessee. (He went by the name of Large.) This inf. was given to the author years ago. It was also told to the author, that he was a school teacher in the Cocke County, Tennessee School System.”
In Texas, “J. C. Large” married his 2nd cousin, Anna Belle Baxter, whose family was also from Cocke County. She was a granddaughter of Aaron Bryant. Anna Belle later married, likely after J. C.'s death, James D. Bryant (ID unknown). J.C. is believed to have died Oklahoma. A descendant reports that he was a prison guard in Tulsa around 1900. A J.C. Large (with wife Ada) was listed as a resident of Muskogee, Okla. (309 N. Main St.) in 1903.
