Pancho Cossío
Birth: Oct. 20, 1894
Death: Jan. 16, 1970

Artist. He was born Francisco Gutiérrez Cossío in Santiago de Baños, Cuba. Soon, his family moved to Spain. He studied with Ceclio Pla and was friend of Francisco Bores. His first exhibition was in 1919. In 1923, he moved to Paris, where knew the painters Picasso, Ismael de la Serna, Hernando Viñes, Togores and María Blanchard. A noted falangist, he joined the fascism during Spanish Civil War, despite of his republican friends. But in 1940, he left the policy. Among his paintings "Marineros," "El Mozallón de las Naranjas," "Torero," "Pintando las Traineras," "Niños con Cometas, "Naipes," "La Lluvia," "Retrato de José Antonio Primo de Rivera," "Retrato de D. Carlos Blanco Soler" and "Bodegón de la Caja de Puros." He died in Alicante, but was buried in Santander, Cantabria, where he lived. (bio by: José L Bernabé Tronchoni)
