Private, 43rd U.S Colored Infantry, Civil War

From the Rutland Daily Herald, May 4, 1903:
William Jackson, a colored man living at Castleton, was run over by a wagon loaded with lumber and instantly killed about 8 o'clock Saturday morning at a place known as "Reed Hollow", about one mile east of West Rutland. Mr. Jackson was on his way to this city with the lumber, accompanied by another colored man. As he was passing through the hollow he fell from the load and one wheel passed over his head, crushing his skull in a horrible manner. The young man who was with him was badly frightened and drove on, leaving the body in the road. Conductor Edmonds of the electric car line saw the body and notified the authorities at West Rutland. Selectman Roger Dwyer of the town of West Rutland took charge of the body until Constable Carl E. Beach arrived with an undertaker from Castleton. Mr. Jackson was 63 years of age. The funeral was held at Castleton yesterday afternoon.
