Prudence Louisa Martin was the fifth child of John Alexander Martin (1810-1898) and Elizabeth "Betsy" Gaunce Martin (1810-1875)of Lawrence County, Illinois, prior residence Brown County, Ohio.

She was the granddaughter of James Martin and Nancy Martin of Ripley County, Indiana and of George Gaunce (1767-1863) and Sarah Martin Gaunce (b. 1786) of Kentucky.

She was the great-granddaughter of Nicholas Gaunce (1744-1816) and Prudence Gaunce.

She was named after her mother's twin sister and also for her maternal great-grandmother Gaunce.

She was one of seven children.

She was the fourth wife of Page Williams(1841-1917).
