Olympic Games Gold Medalist Athlete. An All-American guard for the Oregon State University, he was a member of the United States Olympic Basketball team that competed at the 1948 Summer Olympic Games in London, England. Named Captain of the team, he led it to sweep all seven games they played in the competition, which culminated in a 65-21 victory over France in the Gold Medal game. He had attended Oregon State from 1940 to 1943, but joined the United States Army during World War II before his senior year. After his return from service, where he suffered a leg wound, he completed his college education in 1947.
