Lois Debnam was born April 25, 1932, in Pelham, Georgia, to the late McKinley and Marcia Wilson of Fort Valley, on May 31, 2006, she departed this life. She was 74.
After earning a Bachelor's Degree in Business Education from Fort Valley State college, Lois moved to LaGrange in l95l to become a teacher in the Troup county School System. Her first job in the county was at Davis School. She also taught at Ethel W. Kight High School, Mount Pleasant Elementary School, Troup Junior High School, and Troup High School. During her teaching career, she also earned a Master's of Education from Tuskegee Institute. She retired in l985 after 34 years.
After her retirement, Lois worked at West Georgia Technical College where she conducted Employability Skills Workshops.
A faithful member of St. James C.M.E. Church since her arrival in LaGrange, Lois served in many posts, including Sunday School Superintendent, musician, Director of Christian Education, Director of Bible School, and Missionary President of the Southwest Georgia Conference.
Lois loved her community and had a tireless passion for helping people. Her volunteer efforts included tutoring children in reading, working for the Troup County Chapter of the American Cancer Society, serving on the board of the LaGrange Crisis Pregnancy Center, and volunteering at a shelter for victims of domestic abuse. Frequently, she could be found visiting patients at the hospital and at area nursing homes or encouraging incarerated women at the county jail.
She was a dedicated member of Pheta Xi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and Links, Inc.
Beloved by many, Lois is survived by her husband of 54 years, Jone H. Debnam; son, Jone H. Debnam III,and his wife, Sheryl, Peachtree City, GA; daughter, Marcia Debnam, Bloomington, IN; stepdaughter, Carlotta Colquitt and grand daughter, Joye Giddings, Houston, TX; granddaughter, Andrianna Debnam and great graddaughter Cerin King, both of Dallas tX; sister, Barbara Carson, Macon, GA; brother, Charles Wilson and his wife, Mattie, Carrollton, GA; niece, Rhonda Carson, Carrollton, GA; and nephews, Carlos Carson, Washington, DC; Dr. Charles Wilson, Virginia Beach, VA; and Vincent Wilson, Decatur, GA. She will also be missed by her brothers and siters -in-law, Betty Jefferson, Atlanta, GA; Geraldine Banks, Atlanta, GA; Carolyn Richardson, Zebulon, NC;Kay Dawson and her husband, James, Brooklyn, NY; Karen Taybron, Raleigh NC; Dave Davis, Portsmouth, VA; Carl Davis, Wendell, NC; and cousin, Adolph Mitchell and his wife Claudia, Wendell, NC; Lois is also loved by many other family members and friends.
