Ponhee A. Whaley, 92, a resident of Wenatchee, WA and a longtime resident of the upper Wenatchee Valley, died Tuesday, December 16, 2014, at Maple Lodge Adult Family Home. Ponhee was born on February 27, 1922, to Milas and Nancy (Smelcer) Green at Sevier County, Tennessee, where she was raised and received her early education. She married Dewey Whaley on November 5, 1938, at Pittman Center, TN and they made their first home in the Sevierville area. In December of 1942, they came west to Leavenworth, WA. She worked at the Cashmere Bakery for many years, before going to work at the Post Office in Peshastin, retiring after 28 years on April 3, 1987. Ponhee enjoyed working alongside her husband, Dewey, in the garden, where they produced many vegetables. She also loved growing beautiful flowers and going to church.
She is survived by her daughter, Sue Whaley of Wenatchee; grandchildren, Angie and Ralph Snodgrass, Rachel and Chad Triplett, Gretchen and Ken Modrell, John Dewey, and Amy Brossoit; great-grandchildren, Jake, Josh and Amber, Jessica, Jennifer, Julynn, C.W., Jonathan, Wil, Mya, and Noah; and six great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dewey Whaley; and her sons, Teddy and Darrell Whaley.
A Funeral Service of Commemoration to celebrate the life of Pohnee A. Whaley will be held on Friday, January 2, 2015, at the Peshastin United Church of Christ, at 11:00 a.m., with the Rev. Dr. Ann Hinz officiating. Concluding Service and Interment will be in the Peshastin Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 23, 2014, from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Ward’s Funeral Chapel in Leavenworth. Ward’s Funeral Chapel, Leavenworth, is in charge of the arrangements.
