| Birth: | Dec. 18, 1938 Heaton Tyne and Wear, England | | Death: | Jul. 17, 1996 Newcastle-upon-Tyne Tyne and Wear, England | Rock Musician, Producer. Bassist with the British music ensemble The Animals. After leaving school, he held the occupation of a turner with the Tyneside Shipyards and once he learned the guitar, he found a place as the bass player with the Alan Price Trio. With the addition of Eric Burdon in 1962 as lead singer and front-man, a name-change took place. The Animals went onto becoming one of the top rock and blues groups during the 1960s with the hits "House of the Rising Sun" (1964), "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" (1965) and "We Got to Get Out of This Place" (1965). In 1966, Chandler began focusing on behind-the-scenes musical creativity following his exiting from The Animals after a tour. While attending a New York nightclub, he witnessed the unique style of a guitarist who went by the name of Jimi James (Jimi Hendrix). Convinced he would become a star, he brought Hendrix to England and put together the Jimi Hendrix Experience with Noel Redding (bass) and Mitch Mitchell (drums), with Chandler serving as manager and producer. In 1968, he took the reigns as producer and manager of the British ensemble Slade and over the next twelve years they yielded seven number one hits on the UK Charts and became one of the most successful British bands of the time. By the late 1970s, Chandler bought IBC Studios (which he ran for four years) and later established Barn Records. Occasionally, he joined The Animals on tour the last time being in 1984. By the late 1980s, his health declined from a variety of issues. He endured heart surgery and during that period, he suffered a collapsed kidney and multiple strokes. He died in the hospital while undergoing tests for an aortic aneurysm. (bio by: C.S.)

Was just listening to the Animals to get me up motivated. You're responsible for two of my music loves. Thanks for helping Jimi become the Jimi Hendrix Experience. All music is good for the soul. -
