Appomattox: Emmett George Ayers, 84, of 3357 Oakville Road, died Thursday, May 25, 2006 at the Salem VA Hospital. He was the husband of Peggy Doss Ayers. Emmett was born in Appomattox County, June 28, 1921, a son of the late Malcolm Arthur and Hettie Wilkerson Ayers. He was a member of Bible Baptist Church, self-employed and an army veteran of World War II having fought in the Battle of the Bulge.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons Macon Eugene Ayers and his wife Barbara of Ridgeway, CO; Robert Emmett Ayers and his wife Carol of Pamplin; four daughters, Sandra Lynn Merry and her husband, Bill of Mount Jackson; Mary Elizabeth Highton and her husband, Ronald of FOrest; Hettie Nell Adams of Appomattox and Judy Diane Burggraf and her husband, Robert of Lynchburg; 12 grandchildren, Kathryn, Joel, Brett, Travis, Joyce, Chris, Nigel, Ryan, Samuel, Meghan, Morgan and Stephen; three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Mark Ayers, brothers, John, William and Arthur and a sister, Eula.
A funeral service was conducted at 11:00 am Monday, May 29, 2006 at Bible Baptist Church by the Rev. RObert E. Lee. burial with Military Honors accorded by American Legion Post #104 followed in Old Herman Methodist Church Cemetery.
