Linia Virginia (Duke) Young of Newport News, Va., formerly of Richmond, Va., a World War II veteran and election official, died April 1 at Riverside Convalescent Home in Newport News. She was 86.
• • Born in Henderson, N.C., she was a native of Richmond and moved to Newport News in 1971.
Mrs. Young was a graduate of Chester High School and Smithdeal-Massey Business College.
She served in the Navy Waves during World War II. Mrs. Young was politically active, serving 17 years as an election official for the city of Newport News.
She was a member of Martha Washington Lodge541, auxiliary to the United Transportation Union and a former member of the Hampton Roads Republican Women's Club.
She was also a charter member, past president and past 1st District president of the VFW Post 6002 ladies auxiliary.
She worked for many years as a Grey Lady volunteer in military hospitals both abroad and in the United States.
Mrs. Young as a great pinochle player, a beautiful waltzer, a fervent patriot and a loyal military spouse who kept the home fires burning while her husband served in the Korean and Vietnam wars.

She was a beloved and honorable wife, generous mother and comforting friend.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, retired Command Sgt. Maj. Rexford V.; a son, Vernon K. of Rindge, N.H.; a daughter, Karen A. Holt of Oklahoma City; four grandchildren, Jeremy of Orlando, Fla., Jessica of Richmond, Colby of San Jose and Trevor of Rindge, N.H.; and two brothers, Joseph H. Gentry Jr. and James T. Gentry, both of Richmond.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow at the Cathedral of the Pines, Rindge, N.H.
Burial with full military honors will be in Hillside Cemetery, Rindge, N.H.
