Industrialist Hayden Eames was born in Shanghai, China. His father was attorney Ithamer Bellows Eames and his mother was Emma Hayden. He moved to the US with his parents at the age of 2. He entered the Annapolis Naval Academy at the age of 15 and rose to be Lieutenant in charge of the Eastern Navy Yards. He married Clare Hamilton, daughter of Maryland Governor William T. Hamilton. He organized the Pope Tube Co. makers of the Pope Hartford Automombile in Hartford CT with Percy Maxim in 1895. He also organized automobile maker Columbia Manufacturing Co. He served as general manager of the Studebaker Automomobile Co. from 1907 to 1910. His sister was Madame Emma Eames principal soprano of the Metropoliton Opera. He was the father of theatre actress Clare Eames, grandfather of actress Jennifer Howard and great grandfather of actor Tony Goldwyn.
