Born in Ekron, KY, he moved with his family to the Oklahoma Panhandle in 1909 where they settled on a farm 11 miles west of Hooker near Mouser. He began school at the age of four, attending Frendship School three miles from their home. He and his brother, Albert, moved to Hooker where he took his eighth grade examination. The two moved to Goodwell where he attended high school. Following graduation, he enrolled in Panhandle Agricultural Institute and graduated in 1924. At school he met Irene Jennings and they were wed in her home in Dombey. The couple purchased a homestead six and one-halfmiles east of Adams in 1930 where they made their home since. A member of the Corinth Church, he served as a music leader, Sunday School teacher and deacon.
Survivorsinclude one son, Lt Col (Ret) Kenneth R. Johnston and his wife Galina of Indian Shores, FL; two daughters, Dortha Goss and her husband, John, of Adams and Kay McPherson and her husband Jim, of Aurora, CO, two brothers, Joe B. Jhonston of Hooker and Lt Col (Ret) Bob Johnston of Spokane, WA, sisters, Pattie McElroy of Antioch, CA and Alice Hulse of Portland, OR. Preceding him in death are his parents, his wife, Irene, daughter Ethel Marie and one great grandson.
Funeral services were hele at the Adams First Baptist Church with Rev John Goss officiating.
