Joe Brooks Johnston, 86, of Hooker died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 1996 at Northshore Regional Medical Center in Slidell, Louisiana.

The son of James Edward and Elizabeth Shacklett Johnston, he was born Jan. 24, 1909 in Ekron, Kentucky. In march of 1909 he came with his family to the Panhandle of Oklahoma where he lived for most of his life. He attended school in this area and completed his college work at Panhandle Agricultural Institute in Goodwell, receiving his teaching certificate.

On Aug. 25, 1928, he was united in marriage to Joyce King in Goodwell. They made Hooker area their home for most of their lives together except for several years that the family lived in Pond Creek.

He farmed for most of his life and during this time he also drove the Straight School Bus and Hooker Schools buses and also drove Big Blue. He did this affectionately for many years for the children he transported.

He was a charter member of the Straight Christian Church, where he was a deacon, Sunday School teacher and song leader, and a member of the Hooker Masonic Lodge where he was a Master Mason.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Joyce in June of 1980, a son, David E. Johnston and two brothers, Albert and Ray.

Survivors include his son, Joe B. Johnston Jr. and his wife Pat of Norman; two daughters, Lotus L. Smith and her husband Doug of Hooker and Peggy J. Record and her husband Wade of Slidell, a brother, Lt. Col (Ret.) Bob Johnston and his wife Jane of Spokane, Wash.; two sisters, Patti McElroy of Antioch, CA, and Alice Hulse and her husband Al of Portland, OR; 14 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 14 at the Straight Christian Church with Minister Roy H. Smotherman officiating.
