Birth: Sep. 30, 1801
Rowan County
North Carolina, USA
Death: Sep. 30, 1863
Weber County

During the Mormon exodus, Captain James Brown served as Captain of Company "C" in the United States Mormon Battalion during the Mexican War. James was born to James Brown and Mary (Polly) Williams Brown. He was a pioneer, constable, justice of the peace, missionary, commonwealth builder, and founder of Ogden, Utah.

Brownsville, Utah in Weber County is named in his honor. He lived exactly 62 years, born September 30, 1801, in Rowan County, North Carolina, and died September 30, 1863 in Ogden, Utah.

His parents were religious and God-fearing people who were members of the Baptist Church. James felt strongly about God and religion, and lived his first 33 years as an active Baptist clerk and missionary in the Tom's Creek Baptist Church, and as a constable near present day Denton, Davidson County, North Carolina.

He moved his family to Illinois, where, for 13 years, he farmed and ran 2 mills, served as justice of the peace, and where he and his family were converted to the "Mormon" Church (The Church Of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints). He and his families, with the other Mormons, were driven out of Nauvoo, Illinois, in 1846.

He had 13 wives and 28 children. He lived his last 15 years in Utah, founding the town of Ogden, Utah, and serving on a number of missions.
With Cecelia Henrietta Cornu Brown they had the following children: Charles David Brown, Frederic Brown and James Frederick Brown.
