Granddaughter of David Brydie Mitchell, Georgia governor. She was the daughter of his son John James Mitchell and his second wife.

Married William T. Darnell, 27 Jul 1857. The 1900 census shows Julia as having had five children, but only one survived until that date. Two of their sons were Myrick and Alexander.

Johanna worked as a matron at the Georgia Lunatic Asylum in Milledgeville, GA for many years. She is best known for an act of kindness toward an inmate of this institution.

In February 1893, a woman named Julia Force had shot and killed her two sisters, Florence and Minnie, in Atlanta, GA, and was subsequently tried for murder. She was not convicted by reason of insanity, and spent the rest of her life in the Georgia Lunatic Asylum, where she died 30 March 1916. (Whether or not Julia was truly insane is still debated.)

During her time at Milledgeville, Julia was befriended by Johanna Mitchell Darnell, who died in 1912. In her will, Johanna arranged for Julia to be buried upon her own death in the Mitchell family plot at Memory Hill Cemetery. This was done, although the grave is not marked.
