Professional Tennis Player. He was the Wimbledon Cup Singles Champion in 1949 and a member of the United States Davis Cup team from 1946 to 1951. He was ranked as one of world's top ten players from 1946 to 1951 and was ranked in the United States top ten nine times between the years 1940 and 1951. He was a three time doubles champion between 1940 and 1947 and a mixed doubles champion with Louise Brough Clapp in 1942. In 1942 he won the Intercollegiate Tennis Championship as a member of Stanford University, winning both the singles and doubles competition. He also captured the U.S. singles championship later in the year, earning him a number one American ranking. He served in the U.S. Navy as a fighter pilot in the Pacific Theater during the Second World War and was a four time winner as a member of the United States Davis Cup team from 1946 to 1949. He officially retired from the sport in 1951 and was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1966. He died in California from colon cancer at the age of 84. (bio by: Nils M.
