Emilie is the daughter of Johan Hermand (John Herman), a German immigrant, and Mary Justina Warden Weinhardt. Her father committed suicide, when she was 12 and her mother passed, when she was 15. She married William Alfred (Bub) Hurt on the 29th day of July 1899 in Grandview, Raleigh County, West Virginia. Perhaps she met Bub, while searching for her mother's family, which brought her all the way to Raleigh County, West Virginia from Indiana. Emilie gave birth to 7 daughters in 10 years, which included 1 set of twins Katherine and Carrie. Daughters Sarah Frances, named after her mother-in-law and Caroline Justine (Carrie) married brothers, Douglas Henry and William Joseph (Bob) Meakin. Emilie died when her eldest daughter, Amalia was 14 and her baby, Elizabeth was 4. After Emilie's death, the girls lived part of the time with their uncle, William Warden (Will) and his wife, Carrie K Mauch Warden in Tippecanoe County, Indiana, who were childless. Later, the younger siblings lived with the older, married siblings. The girls remained close all of their lives.

Emilie reportedly died from gall stones. She appeared very thin and frail in photographs taken before her death.
