Born Ruth Meckler, she was married the violinist Jaime Laredo - they were together for 16 years before the marriage ended. She was hailed by the New York Daily News as "America's First Lady of the Piano", achieving worldwide notority as a leading soloist and recording artist. She was particularly renowned for her recordings of the complete piano sonatas of composer Alexander Scriabin and also the complete solo piano music of Sergei Rachmaninoff. She had won several awards throughout her career, including 3 Grammy nominations. Ruth Laredo held a faculty position at the Manhattan School of Music, and left a considerable legacy of piano artistry when she passed away in 2005. (bio by: Mike Shakinovsky)
