Douglas R. Speier, 71, Gorham, formerly of Hays, died Sunday, Aug. 16, 2009, at Wheatland Nursing Center, Russell. He was born July 13, 1938, in Hays to Anton and Catherine (Younger) Speier.

He married Mary Ann Stadelman on Aug. 9, 1969, in Hays.

He graduated from St. Joseph Military Academy, Hays. He was a master plumber. He was a U.S. Marine veteran, serving during the Vietnam War. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Gorham, a former member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays, and a member of the American Legion, Hays.

Survivors include his wife, of the home; two daughters, Deena Kay Speier, Gorham, and Diane Senesac and husband, Frank, Fort Riley; and three grandchildren, Steven, Dalton and Kara.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Ralph, Clarence and William "Whimp"; and a sister, Agnes Hartley.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays; burial in St. Joseph Cemetery, with military honors by Hays American Legion. Friends can call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 to 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, both at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 20th and Pine. A Gorham Daughters of Isabella rosary will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday, followed by a parish vigil at 6:30 p.m., both at the funeral home.
