His obituary which appeared in The Crowley Daily Signal, Crowley, Louisiana, 9 December 1963 reads: Velia Bertrand Rites Held Today – Velia Bertrand, Sr. 79, of Crowley, died at the American Legion Hospital here at 1 p.m. Saturday. Funeral services were held at 9:30 a.m. today in the Immaculate heart of Mary Church and burial was in the Ebenezer Cemetery. Mr. Bertrand had lived in Crowley for the past 50 years moving here from Abbeville. Surviving are nine sons, Magnus, Eckels, Alex, and Jimmy Bertrand, all of Crowley, Sandras Bertrand of Houston, Tex., Elmo Bertrand of Orange, Tex., Paul Bertrand of Blanchard, Robert Bertrand of Beaumont, Tex., and Velia Bertrand of Honolulu; eight daughters, Mrs. Sterling Stutes, Mrs. Robert Perry, Mrs. Jimmy Wood, and Mrs. Elmo Porter, all of Crowley, Mrs. Buela Petry and Mrs. William Sarver of Indian Bayou, Mrs. Kermit Robideaux of Patterson, and Mrs. James Strother of Lake Charles; 30 grandchildren, and 19 great grandchildren. The Geesey-Ferguson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
