David Dubinsky was one of the world’s most important labor leaders, and a great humanitarian. He was the longest serving president of the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union (ILGWU) from 1932–1966, vice president of the AFL-CIO, and recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Under his leadership the ILGWU was a pioneer in healthcare, education and social engagement for its members.

Dubinsky was born David Isaac Dobnievski in Brest-Litovsk, Russia (now Brest, Belarus.) His family moved to Lodz (then Russia, now Poland) about 1895. After being arrested by the Tsarist police for labor activity, he was imprisoned and then exiled to Siberia. He made his way to New York in 1911, and became active in union activities there.

He took part in the creation of the CIO and was one of the founders of the American Labor Party and the Liberal Party of New York.
