Personal designer of First Lady Jacquiline Kennedy Onassis, and creator of the pillbox hat. He dropped out of the University of Indiana in 1951 after one semester. He then worked as a window dresser in a department store in Chicago until he opened up his own store in New York in 1957. In 1960 his signature pillbox hat appeared on the cover of Hapers Bazaar. His hats were worn by stars such as Lauren Bacall, Liza Minnelli, Barbara Walters, and Elizabeth Taylor. In 1968 he opened his own salon in New York City which became the toast of the fashion industry. His career was at it's highpoint in the 1970s. He had a sucsessful line of fragrances as well as clothes which were made out of a fabric known as "Ultra Suede". During this time he was known as one of the central figures of Studio 54. He was the most popular fashion designer of the 1960's. He died from AIDS at the age of 57. (bio by: Jack)
