Mary Jane [Berry] born 3 Nov 1861 in Wapello, Iowa, eldest child of Leander Charles Berry and Sarah Ellen Smith. Father had returned from civil war to an end of 1st marriage in divorce (no record of abt. 1871). Her father remarried abt 1882 to Theresa Dunlap (widow of Caleb Hedges), who had 4 children. Her mother had 9 other children in 3 marriages, she remarried 5 Sep 1872, to David R Swope (died 1876) with 2 children AND thirdly to John William Shahan in 1878, with 4 children. Mary Jane [Berry] arrived in KS (abt 1885) with husband (m. 1877) George Homer Canfield I and 3 sons (Lloyd, Ernest, Elvin), after her father's migration to KS (abt 1881). Her youngest son (Elvin) died at 12 yrs in Feb 1897. Her death soon followed in Jun 1900, now known as Derby, KS. Husband remarried in 1906 to Mary Etta Cox [Winn], a divorced woman with 2 sons (Lester, Roscoe). Mary's eldest (Lloyd) followed his father with 2nd family to Washington. Other siblings were George Homer II, Elsie May, Mildred Lorene... Ernest Canfield (middle son of Mary Jane and G.H.) remained in Butler County area, with his wife Jessie Pearl [Richey] and their 3 sons (Merle, Earl, Robert).
