Social Reformer. He was the Director-General of the World Health Organization. Born in Seoul, South Korea, he became Director-General on July 21, 2003, and was the first Korean to lead an international agency. He held a medical degree from Seoul National University, and a Master's degree in public health from the University of Hawaii. Joined WHO in 1983, where he worked on a number of projects including the Global Programme for Vaccines and Immunizations and Stop TB. Recognized as a world leader in the fight against two of the greatest challenges to international health and development - tuberculosis and vaccine preventable diseases of children. Most recently he was at the forefront of the global fight to prevent an avian flu pandemic. (bio by: Fred Beisser)
