Edith ("Deede") Aldrich Allred died at her home in Salt Lake City, Utah on March 22, 1995.
She was born in Mt. Pleasant, Utah to O. M. Aldrich and Sena Monsen Aldrich. Married to Sheldon S. Allred on July 12, 1935. Marriage later solemnized in the Manti Temple.
"Deede" was a great, generous Mom, "[a] devoted educator...[a] respected scholar...[a] grand lady...[a] warm and caring human being." She inspired young people, through her work, by making the study of English and literature a stimulating and exciting experience. She was honored by the College of Eastern Utah with a Special Service Award, among many teaching honors, which bestowed upon her the simple title "truly great teacher." She touched many lives and made many faithful friends in consequence of her devotion to her work.
A life-long member of the LDS Church, Deede was a granddaughter of Martin Handcart Company pioneers. She was exceedingly proud of her Mormon heritage, and exercised her Mormon faith in her own special way. She had a wonderful sense of humor and loved a good joke. She appreciated fairness, disliked injustice and treated all kinds of people exactly the same. She lived independently and managed her affairs to the date of her death. She taught school at Salina, Utah, which has always held a special place in her heart, in her beloved Mt. Pleasant, and at home in Price, where she was, for many years, affiliated with the College of Eastern Utah.
Deede is survived by her children, Joel M. and Karen Allred, Douglas E. and Lucy Allred Pike, and Marianna Allred Hopkins, all of Salt Lake City; by a sister, Marian Wiseman, by ten grandchildren and one great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, by her husband, who died in Salt Lake City on September 19, 1985; by two sisters, Lucille Aldrich and Merle Aldrich Hedquist, and by her two brothers, Ray Aldrich and Clair M. Aldrich.
Funeral services will be held at 12 noon on Monday, March 27, 1995 at the Wasatch Lawn Mortuary Chapel, located at 3401 South Highland Drive in Salt Lake City, Utah, where friends may call from 10:45-11:45 a.m. prior to the service. Interment will be in the Mt. Pleasant City Cemetery at 3:30 p.m. on March 27, 1995.
The family expresses special thanks to Mom's wonderful and loyal friends at the Highland Cove Condominiums.
