By 1890 John's mother, Olive Blount-Benefield, had married S. H. Williams in Decatur County, Georgia, on 31 Dec 1889.
On 31 Dec 1893, John married Emma Mae Griner in Decatur County, Georgia. His surname at that time was spelled as Bennefield.
In the 1900 census, John Mitchell Benefield's surname spelling had changed to BENNINGFIELD which has since become the family name of his descendants. John and Emma were living with their sons, James C. Benningfield and John F Benningfield, at Donalsonville, Decatur County (then), Georgia, in 1900.
His first wife, Emma Mae Griner, died about 1903. They had four (4) known children:
- James Corbit Benningfield (1895-1939)
- John Thomas Benningfield (1897-1982)
- Benjamin Franklin Benningfield (1900-1963)
- Leslie Lee Roy Benningfield (1903-1993)
By the 1910 census, John had married a 2nd wife by name of Alberta. They were living at Spring Hill, Grady County, Georgia, with 3 of his sons (Corbit, Thomas, and Thomas). His other son, Lee Roy, was living with his Grandmother Olive Blount-Benefield-Williams and Grand Uncle Thomas Blount at Whigham, Grady County, Georgia.
In 1920 census, John and Alberta were still living at Spring Hill, Grady County, Georgia with his sons, Lee Roy, Thomas, and Frank. Alberta was with child when the 1920 census was taken at their house on 8 Mar 1920. Their daughter, Mittie Mae Benningfield was born on 13 Sep 1920.
In 1930, John Mitchell Benningfield (Benefield) was 69 years old living in Enterprise, Coffee County, Alabama with his 2 older sons. No other information about his life has been found as of this time. It is believed that he died around 1935 in Alabama. After then, the family moved back to Grady County, Georgia before the 1940 census was taken.
