Marta was born in Columbus, Ohio, on March 12, 1961, and reared in Southern California. She was the daughter of the late Michael and Theresa Hersek, and sister to Michael Hersek, Tracy Hersek-Weaver, Jeanine Hersek, and Paul Hersek.
Marta attended Mayfair High School in Lakewood, California, and received her Bachelor of Science degree in biology from the University of California, Los Angeles. Marta received her PhD from the University of California, Davis, in animal behavior, and did post-doctoral research for the Smithsonian. Her research topics included rattlesnake behavior and bird song. During her doctoral studies, Marta met Michael, and they married in 1989 in Sacramento, California.
After Marta and Michael finished their graduate and post-doctoral research, they moved to New England and ultimately settled in Sudbury. Marta was an assistant professor at Boston University where she taught biology and studied ovenbird behavior and, after her son Matthew was born, taught biology and science at Northeastern and then at Lowell High School until this past fall.
Marta was an avid birder, nature lover, gardener, and traveler. A voracious reader, she founded the Pokonoket Book Club. She was an energetic "baseball mom" and enjoyed theatre and the fine arts. She relished playing board and card games with her family and friends. Marta sparked connections among people and always made them feel welcome in any group. She will be remembered for her joy, her laughter, her kindness, and her deep appreciation of life. A celebration of Marta's life will be held in June when her garden is in bloom. In lieu of flowers, Marta's family suggests donations be made in her memory to the Sudbury Valley Trustees: http://www.sudbury valleytrustees.org/.
