Birth: 1935
Death: May 5, 2006

College president, scholar and author. Born in Colorado, he was working as seminar director at the Foundation for Economic Education when, at age 36, he became the 11th president of Hillsdale College in Michigan (and the youngest college president in the nation) and led the school from near finanical collapse to national prominence. His efforts changed the face and reputation of Hillsdale. He wrote books, nine in all, about the struggle between the forces of excellence and mediocrity, raised funds, hundreds of millions amd he created a seminar series that brought outstanding scholars and people in the news to campus so that students could learn from them. In 1985 the college hit the national spotlight when he declared that it would not accept federal financial aid because of the many mandatory government restrictions, including affirmative action. When all student loans were to be called by the the Department of Health Education & Welfare, he organized a private loan fund guaranteed by Hillsdale's own credit and provided privately-based financial aid that replaced the federal student loans, raising little Hillsdale to a national symbol of independence. With his leadership, Hillsdale's national speech digest, "Imprimis," was launched, the core curriculum of the college was expanded, its traditional liberal arts curriculum increased and its commitment to free market economics strengthened. Retired from Hilldale in 1999. Cause of death: apparent heart attack, in Louisville, Kentucky.
