Joseph Wilbert Carawan, beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather, died June 1, 2013 in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Born in Engelhard, May 10, 1920, he was the son of the late Joseph Mitchell and Mattie Gibbs Carawan who were both from Hyde County.
He was married to the former Viola Evelyn Mason who preceded him in death.
He spent his entire career of 31 years in the U. S. Coast Guard and retired to Virginia Beach, VA in 1975.
He had been living in Scottsdale, AZ for the last 7 years with his only child, Cheryl A. Vermillion and her husband, Joseph Vermillion.
He is also survived by two granddaughters, Angie Vermillion and her husband, Dr. Sean Meehan of Potomac Falls, VA and Alyssa Vermillion of Scottsdale, AZ. He also leaves three great-grandchildren, Sean and Emma Meehan and Amya Vermillion Anderson.
He was also preceded in death by a sister, Doris Carawan Foster.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, October 9, 2013 at Swan Quarter Christian Church. Pastor Sonny Furrow will officiate. Burial will follow in Soule Cemetery.
